Our crews use specialized safe-moving equipment and proven techniques to safely move gun safes, fire safes, commercial safes and other heavy safes. Our low-profile trailer is designed to make loading and transporting heavy safes safer and more controlled. Because the trailer sits close to the ground, the loading angle is much lower than with a traditional moving truck or liftgate. We can also use a winch when needed to carefully pull heavy safes onto the trailer. Once loaded, the safe is secured using the trailer’s E-track tie-down system, which gives us multiple anchor points for properly securing the safe during transportation.

Liftgates can be useful for certain safe-moving situations, but they require careful handling because the safe must be raised several feet off the ground before loading. For most of our moves, we prefer our low-profile trailer because it keeps the safe closer to ground level and allows for a more controlled loading process.
For extremely heavy safes, we can use the trailer’s winch to gradually pull the safe up the ramp rather than relying on the movers to push the full weight. This setup allows us to safely handle safes weighing thousands of pounds while keeping the loading process controlled from beginning to end.

Ramps for Moving Heavy Safes
Ramps are one of the most useful tools for moving heavy safes over steps and raised entrances. We carry ramps in several lengths and sizes so we can choose the setup that best fits the property and the weight of the safe. By bridging over the steps, a ramp can create a smoother and more controlled path for the safe. For longer staircases—typically around 10 steps or more—a ramp may not be practical, so we evaluate the access and use other specialized equipment when necessary.
Dutro Dolly for Moving Safes
Our Dutro dolly is designed for moving heavy safes weighing up to approximately 1,600 pounds. Its wide wheelbase helps support the load and makes it easier to carefully tilt and maneuver a heavy safe. Although one experienced mover may be able to control some safes with this equipment, we typically use a two-person crew for added safety and control. For especially wide safes, the Dutro may not provide enough stability, so we use our tandem hydraulic dollies instead.
Stair Climbing Dolly For Heavy Safes
Our electric stair-climbing dolly has a lifting capacity of up to 1,200 pounds and can be used to move safes both up and down stairs. Unlike a standard appliance dolly, the stair-climbing system allows the safe to move from step to step in a more controlled manner. This helps reduce the impact placed on stairs, flooring and the safe itself while giving our crew better control throughout the move.

Tandem Hydraulic Dollies for Heavy Safes
We use several types of tandem dollies depending on the weight, width and access conditions of the safe. Tandem dollies support the safe from both sides, helping distribute the load and giving our crew greater control when moving especially large or heavy safes.
Our yellow hydraulic tandem dolly is our primary system and has a lifting capacity of up to 4,000 pounds. We also use a narrower blue hydraulic tandem dolly rated for up to 1,500 pounds. Its slimmer design can be useful in tighter spaces where the larger yellow system may not fit.
For moves on flat, level surfaces, we can also use an Anderson tandem dolly. Unlike our hydraulic systems, the Anderson dolly does not adjust in height, so we select it only when the conditions of the move are appropriate.
Using Liftgates to Load Heavy Safes
Although we no longer use liftgates on our own moving vehicles, we occasionally use them when loading a safe into a customer’s rental truck or private vehicle. If your truck has a liftgate, please let us know in advance and provide the safe’s approximate weight and the liftgate’s rated lifting capacity. For safety, we will only use a liftgate when its capacity is sufficient for the weight of the safe. If the safe exceeds the liftgate’s rating, we will use another loading method rather than risk damage to the safe, equipment or property.
Using a pallet jack to move a safe
Our heavy-duty pallet jacks have a lifting capacity of up to 5,500 pounds and can be very useful when moving large safes across flat, solid surfaces. Because some safes are tall and top-heavy, however, weight capacity is only one part of the equation. Our crew also considers the safe’s height, center of gravity, floor conditions and available clearance before deciding whether a pallet jack is the safest equipment for the job.
Using Forklifts for Difficult Safe Moves
Some safe-moving situations require equipment beyond traditional dollies and ramps. Although we do not provide or operate forklifts ourselves, our crew can prepare the safe, place it on the appropriate moving dolly and coordinate the safe’s movement onto or off of a forklift when one is available.
In the job shown below, two safes had been located in an upstairs unit since the 1970s. The building was later remodeled and the elevator was removed, leaving a staircase that was too narrow for the safes to pass through. A forklift was used to lower the safes through the former elevator opening, allowing our crew to safely remove them from the building.

A safe located in an open garage or commercial building with wide doors will usually be easier and less expensive to move than a similar safe located upstairs or in a tight area. Yes. We can move many safes up or down stairs using specialized equipment such as stair-climbing dollies, ramps and heavy-duty moving equipment. The safest method depends on the safe’s weight and dimensions, the number and width of the stairs, landings, turns and the construction of the staircase. For particularly heavy safes or difficult stairways, we may need additional equipment or a larger crew. Photos of the safe and staircase help us determine the best approach before the move.

We use different types of floor protection depending on the safe’s weight, the flooring and the equipment needed for the move. This may include Masonite panels, plywood, steel or aluminum sheets, moving blankets and other protective materials. For extremely heavy safes, distributing the weight across a larger surface can help reduce pressure on hardwood, tile, laminate and other flooring while the safe is being moved.
Can you move a safe that is bolted to the floor?
Yes. We can remove many safes that are bolted or anchored to the floor. The process depends on how the safe was installed, the type of anchors used and the surface underneath it. If possible, send us photos of the safe and the mounting area so we can determine what tools and equipment may be needed before the move.
